In all of human history, in some form, faith in the divine has always played a part. However, the story of the God of Israel, is unique. Unlike the religions of the past who believed in many gods, the revelation of the God of Israel is that He is one God and that He not only molded creation, but made it. As the Psalms say: He is the Maker of heaven and earth. The other major difference is that unlike the pagan gods, this one God was personal, He was a God involved in the life of all thing, the God who holds all things in existence. It is this that marks the one true God out from the rest as the only God, the one who makes Himself know to humanity. The picture to you left tells one of the most important stories in which God reveals His name to Moses. The Bible tells us this: There the angel of the Lord appeared to him in a flame of fire out of a bush; he looked, and the bush was blazing, yet it was not consumed. Then Moses said, ‘I must turn aside and look at this great sight, and see why the bush is not burned up.’ When the Lord saw that he had turned aside to see, God called to him out of the bush, ‘Moses, Moses!’ And he said, ‘Here I am.’ Then he said, ‘Come no closer! Remove the sandals from your feet, for the place on which you are standing is holy ground.’ He said further, ‘I am the God of your father, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.’ And Moses hid his face, for he was afraid to look at God… But Moses said to God, ‘If I come to the Israelites and say to them, “The God of your ancestors has sent me to you”, and they ask me, “What is his name?” what shall I say to them?’ God said to Moses, ‘I am who I am.’. He said further, ‘Thus you shall say to the Israelites, “I am has sent me to you.”’ God also said to Moses, ‘Thus you shall say to the Israelites, “The Lord. the God of your ancestors, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, has sent me to you”: This is my name for ever, and this my title for all generations. (Exodus. 3). However, the story of the one God is only reveled fully in Jesus. It was through Jesus that they came to see God in the flesh. Jesus acted in the person of God, He forgave sins, he told people to come to Him, he even said things like this: ‘take courage, I am’. Jesus even claimed God’s name for Himself. However, it is with the coming of Jesus that we also come to see God’s inner-personal relationship also. This we call the doctrine of the Trinity. The Father, Son and Holy Spirit, here is a clip below to briefly explain this.
